Good idea

As you know I've been getting into wood working a little bit recently.

So I've been on a few wood working forums.

I saw a supplier set up something recently that I thought was interesting.

They had a new plane out. So what they did was give it to a forum member to test. They kept it for a few days and then passed it onto the next person to test and so on. All they had to do was write a few words on the forum about it and then pass it on after a couple of days.

I thought it was a great way of people being able to try a product out and for the manufacturer to get feedback but also to promote his goods.

Seemed to be a win win situation for supplier and customer, as long as the product is good it, but I guess the manufacturer has faith in their product.

Well, you've already tried a Supercharged, but didn't pass it around for the other members to try - Meany

Trust YOU to lower the tone Ben

Yes, a decent idea and something which would be worth getting into except I don't know much about stuff, well not really enough to give a valuable contribution.

Dom I don't think you need to know a lot about stuff technical to know if it's good or not. Anyway part of the idea for the manufacturer is to get people to use their product so that they want to but it. I want a RRS!!

Manufacturers want the opinion of their consumers or potential customers, most don't actually want or need the thoughts of the uber geeks.

LR is a classic example, look at where they advertise and sponsor:

Rugby
Horse Trials
Sailing

Look at where they don't advertise or support
Land Rover owner shows

Reason is simple people who go to Rugby, Sailing and Horsey things buy new Discos, RR's etc. People who go to LRO show but old Defenders.

When I went to the premiereship final recently (Rugby) you couldn't move for Land Rovers, in fact my mate even commented that he thought LR must be displaying their models in the car park.

I do see what you mean Stu although I can't help thinking I might qualify as one of those Uber Geeks. I love most things LR but don't buy new cars from them, can't afford to is the long and short of it.

I priced up my new L405 at the dealer a while back. Small 3.0 engine was the start point, not the 'Charger that I would have preferred, the 3.0 diesel. I specified Vogue SE trim so middle of the road there. I added a few options (OK, quite a few  ) which I thought a RR should have such as expensive leather, the top sound/entertainment system and so on. I stopped short of a 3 grand set of bling wheels though. End result was still over 100 grand. For me that needs to be 3 years old and 40 grand.

Now, I am by no means alone in this dilemma, there's plenty of folks like me who don't have massive disposable incomes. So how on earth could we possibly add value to LR in terms of information on product trials unless we're talking about products we can afford? I really don't understand, genuinely.

More to the point, as I mentioned before I think, if LR do want some info from a regular bloke who doesn't fart out fivers, 100 clap to me does not represent a new L405. What 100 clap means to me is a 60k secondhand Vogue and a secondhand DB9 for the weekends. Now that being the case, who exactly does fit the profile which LR seek? 'Cos it sure as hell ain't me Fella. It needs to be someone who both has 100k to spare AND doesn't puce at the thought of the depreciation, a rare breed. In all honesty the most value I could personally add to LR as a tester would be on their range of accessories.

Dom, I was using LR as an example of companies who don't target enthusiasts. I was more thinking the people who make after market stuff might be interested to get feedback from people who do buy their stuff.

Say IID Tool, or LED light bars etc etc.

Ah, now I get you. So, what I'd like to trial is a large box of anti mind-fog tablets please.

Could work for car cleaning products although trial size bottles might be better.
