If it starts and goes in reverse then move it to manual mode and see if the gears are selectable. If so then check the gearbox linkage on the side of the gearbox.

It could still come from the front and get blown back. Has the gearbox been topped up with oil recently as the overflow is via a pipe into the bell housing. Failing that check up on top of engine and see if its coming from up there

If the replacement is squealing, stating the obvious, something is wrong, as it is travelling to far. Who replaced the unit? Are the brake shoes worn? Are the brakes adjusted correctly? Are the brake cables moving okay and fitted properly?

Remember when doing any updates that the vehicle battery must maintain its voltage so some sort of charger should be connected to the battery

The D3 & D4 have a ARB at the front and rear. When you say "swaying" it could be the roll bar bushes, lower control arms or shock absorbers. How many miles/km's has it done

A good explanation of the fault system. The LR3 uses a "can bus" system which means they are all chained together in a loop (resistors are up in the instrument panel if I remember correctly) and the signals from one ecu pass through the other ecu's.
