Insurance Trackers

I don't know how many of you have "kids" that have passed their driving test and have cars with trackers on, but I have come to the conclusion that they are largely a scam.

Cassie has one in her car as basically it halved the premium.

Since she has it fitted (well 2nd one the first was DOA) she had been scoring 10 for speed, smoothness and time of journey. (Except one poor time score when she came back from friends late at night - meeh whatever)

Christmas day she picked up both my parents and Jane's parents to have over for lunch. I was passenger for the trip to collect the inlaws so she knew the way (She has been a passenger there and back loads of times, but still don't know the way!) She got a very poor score for speed and slightly bad journey time. Same when she took them back.

Next day we all went to the inlaws for tea. And as far as I'm concerned drove no different from what she did the day before (Actually was a slightly higher average speed!) yet scored 10's across the board - same on the way back.

The policy "rewards" good driving by a quarterly cash back - which cassie's current score (3.8) now means it will be zero. And the reduction on the policy for next year is now 12% from the maximum 33%

I've done some analysis on the data and assuming the speed scores are correct, then I work it out as an average of 7. This is based on multiplying the scores by mileage and adding them up and then dividing them by the total miles travelled and then by 3 to give an overall score out of 10.

So how the hell they got to 3.8, I haven't a clue.

Could they be using the worst score rather than an average?

No idea!

If they are it does mean you can't improve it - so I wouldn't have thought it! And the lowest score is 2.8 - speed and time of use!

Just a money making scam. I've decided!

Must be worth sharing your analysis and concerns with the tracker providers. One would have thought that they would be wanting to encourage good driving rather than disincentive them

I’ve just read a couple of insurance sites about how they calculate the score - quite interesting.
They don’t all seem to use the same method but I don’t think any of them just average the drives.
So one “poor” drive might have more of an impact (sorry) than one would expect.

I'm sure you are right John - I've yet to find the calculation on Morethans website.

Still makes a mockery of it. There argument will be I'm based around the "safer" driver bit - based on the way Cassie drives, I can't imagine how anyone scores an average of 7.5!
