Ouch and you'd think in a recession people would head out walking and mountaineering more as it's not expensive as some other things, well walking isn't

Oh well here's hoping they don't go under, the sale might be great but it would be a sad day

Shame; when we had a Blacks in town it was a preferable stop to Millets; staff seemed much more knowledgeable without having to BS. Hope they survive; competition is necessary in every sector to stop pi55take prices.

Millets and Blacks are one in the same company.

Not much of a fan of either really, they've become a bit more "fashionable" and have little technical kit and even less knowledge or passion. I pop into Cotswolds tonight and at least the staff are outdoor people with a passion for what they're selling.

Have to agree with you Stu - we have a Blacks, Millets, Cotswold and Ellis Brigham all within a 10 minute walk of each other.

Blacks caters for the Chav market who want Berghaus and North Face as part of their 'uniform'

Millets seems to sell more and more cheap kit which doesn't really last

Cotswold has a reasonable range at a reasonable price which knowledgeable staff - it's were I get my kit and the lad's DoE stuff

Ellis Brigham has really good kit but the prices are well off the radar and the staff (while knowledgeable) tend to look down their noses at you - like an Outdoor Harvey Nicks

Didn't realise that, it certainly didn't seem like it from the range of goods or staff knowledge on show in Swindon.

I suspect ours didn't last because as you say, Cotswolds is very much better - not as good as when I first found them in a knackered out wooden shack in the middle of the Cotswold water park (back then they stocked the spare parts for all the kit! Replacment pump for a Coleman duel fuel? hold on, here we are sir! ) but still very good knowledge and range.

Yep I'm with you there Dom. I get a bit annoyed when they sell a £100 stove and don't stock the spares or accessories for it. I recently had to buy the maintenance kit for my multi fuel stove and none of the places listed on the manufacturers website had it. Out of frustration I phoned the manufacturer who were excellent and sent me the kit FOC as I couldn't get one anywhere.

Euro Hike is Millets and Blacks own brand and you'll find it in both of their stores but not in any others, unless you happen to have a "Free Spirit" near you which is also part of the blacks group. Blacks also bought "The outdoor shop" which was owned by the Scout association although they were never particularly good for outdoor gear. I know Cotswold have looked at buying blacks in the past so I guess they might make an offer. Blacks haven't done very well since the credit crunch in 2009.

Is this true? I know that when I left the UK "Chavism" was just starting to get popular  but it was with Burberry scarves and stuff like that.

I've got a couple of high-end(ish) North Face jackets and they are very good bits of kit, but I had no idea that they have been adopted by the "yoof" as part of their psuedo gang culture.
