First time for me in that area at that time of day on a weekday - couldn't believe the amount of traffic on the M27 particularly going East!

The M27 does get pretty busy. I guess you have Portsmouth and Soutjampton which are not reasonable size cities but when you consider that you have the ferrys from Portsmouth and the cruises and container port at Southampton both cities probably generate more traffic than a "normal" city of their size.
