Blimps

Post by brummiedeano » Sun Apr 29, 2012 4:59 pm

OK, just throwing this first one into the pot as a discussion point ...

Have we ever considered purchasing\renting advertising balloons\blimps for club events to give visibility of where we are from a distance ... thinking about LR shows etc so people know where we are from afar. Not talking massive blimps, something along the lines of these :

We have discussed flags but I like the idea of a blimp!

I used to work for a company who was the market leader in ISDN solutions in the UK. We once did a show at Olympia and had a massive stand which cost about 100,000 overall. Our main competitor in the UK was a three man team and they had a tiny cheap stand at the back of the hall. However their MD was a bright cookie, and he hired a radio controlled airship, that was all branded up. He then spent a good portion of the show flying it over our stand! I thought it was pretty funny. I actually got to know him reasonably well and he a nice guy with a good sense of humour. Our sales director was livid though and eventually got agreement from the organisers that you owned the airspace above your stand as well. All good fun.

It would be, although by the time you've bolted stuff I there'd be no chance of it flying. I suspect a custom build blimp would be a tad expensive. I wonder if we could do a deal with Land Rover PR and get a D4 hot air balloon made. They could buy it and we could be the recovery crew (along with free flights for members!) do you think they'd go for that?

I like the blimp idea actually.

Whilst considering inflatables for the club (and no, I'm not going down that path quite yet ;) ) I just saw a day in the life of the police type program, and the SOCOs had a portable inflatable lighthouse to light up the crime scene - looked uber cool! Club must have too?

That would only be useful to Clive though. He's the only one that's sailed his D3 as far as I know. :D
