My eldest will be 17 next year and if things go to plan is likely to move out of home. She will hopefully be going to Bournemouth which isn't too far away but because of her age I think she is quite cautious. She very outgoing and I'm sure she'll be fine but one thing I did suggest to MrsStu is that we could look to get her a car and try and get her through her driving test asap so that she has some freedom and can easily get back home to go to things with friends etc.

I was thinking of leasing a nice shiny new 5 star safety small efficient car that won't break down etc. Anyway she would like a defender 90 with seats in the back!

Any ideas on the best places to look for one? I'm wondering if auction might be good. I don't mind working on it but can't be doing with buying a pile of rust.

My Niece (Brother in laws daughter, who ever that is!) has just passed her test and has bought a new car - which included insurance (And a black box) and seems to be the cheapest way to go for the first time driver.

I suspect you will find insurance on a Defner prohibitively expensive for a 17yr old - though happy to be proven wrong!

As for finding (a good) one - no idea - try one of the local 4x4 clubs?

My eldest lad has an 04 FIAT Panda 1.2, with a bit of 'student of approved uni' discount he/we paid £1000 for his first year through Endsleigh.
I spent an evening on Compare the Market going through all the <=1.3 cars within price range and this came up as one of the cheapest.

It is a good little car, no visible rust on the bodywork.
Parts are relatively cheap too.

I'd assume an old defender would be cheap to insure? Maybe I'll have to look at that first.

If you could fine a nice 300TDi it would probably qualify for classic insurance. Or even a 2.5 naturally aspirated one. The issue is finding a decent one but if you did the insurance shouldn't be too bad and the power levels will be low enough to remove a lot of temptation.

TBH I was thinking the same for my Lad, even though he's only 11 at the moment. My plan was to find something half decent and get it rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis with the idea being he does some of the work with me to become competent enough to do his own maintenance. I did consider an insurance black box but the concern here is it might give false alerts of breakdowns with an old 90 being so slow. :lol:

I already take him for junior driving lessons and we have a half day at LR booked in an Evoque auto. Again, the idea being that some investment now should pay me back when it comes time for insurance. They love all that pass plus, young driver's club etc. I spoke to the insurance about this at some length and if I put him on my policy for 1 year before he turns 17 (which is required if he wants to use my car at Young Drivers) that effectively gives him 1 year of NCB.

Having said all of the above though it would still probably be much cheaper to buy a super-mini thing as noted by z4c4ts above. There are models aimed at exactly this situation now. Small engine,black box etc.

I'm not too worried about temptation. Harriet is way more sensible than I was. No chance of getting 120 out of a ninety not like I managed in my Mum's Nissan sunny! (Must have been down hill with a big tail wind!)

The classic car insurance is interesting. I might have to do some digging.

Remind me - is it the 90 or the 110 that needs rock sliders to improve side impact safety for the occupants?

Scaffold tubes all round was my thinking. I still remember (and apologies if you've heard this from me before) driving to work and seeing a Mondeo rear end a 110. The guy in the 110 got out, walked round the back and checked it was all ok, got back in and drove off. Never said a word to Mondeo man who was busy dealing with steam pouring out of his car and a new crinkle cut bonnet. Priceless.

They do say a defender drivers crumple zone is the other car!

Statistically the Defender is one of the "safest" cars on the road. Based purely on data collected from the insurers - one reason being that the odd knock is character, other cars come off worse as you have said and they don't normally go that fast so just don't have accidents.
