I don't think you could use external with a standard sized plate.

Sorry to hear about you eye again!

Stu,
IMHO the main disadvantage of the discreet winch mount is that you cannot easily see how the cable is laying on the drum during winching without putting yourself directly in the danger zone. This can be avoided by various methods though.

The main disadvantge of external mount is that it reduces the approach angle of the vehicel & that your winch & electrics are the first thing to cop all the :censored: off road or in bad weather.

Regards
Nick

I did think about the approach angle, but if it's that bad I'll winch myself up! :-D

OK, so how about this...

This is a hidden winch mount that will support a TDS Goldfish 12.0c (I have a few pics with one fitted). In this example the bumper cut away is wider then normal and the plasma hawse fairlead is actually mounted to the winch tray itself, thereby being much stronger. The cut-out for the fairlead could be covered by the numberplate by using numerous techniques including flip-up, velcro, mounting pins and plate etc... So in daily use you wouldn't really know a winch was even fitted. (except for the hook dangling down underneath - but even that could be disguised with a colour-coded sleeve and shackle)

Image

Because the fairlead is attached to the tray it is much stronger. Because the cut-out is as wide as possible (it is a basic bumper cut and lined with some rubber edging strip as wide as permitted by the chosen number plate mounting method and aesthetic limitations) the possibility of the bumper interfering with the rope is reduced to pretty much zero (you'd have to pull at a crazy angle to snag it).

Image

The second image, above, shows an additional cut-out between the two existing grooves in the top of the lower cross-member. This allows for much improved visibility of and access too the drum. A mirror cut-out could be made on the bottom of the upper cross-member to provide fairly easy access to even the largest hands. This would allow you to see from a distance and safer offset angle the wire as it feeds onto the drum, although other methods and possibilities exist. It would also permit reasonable access to the wire and drum for simple tasks.

This would also mean that members with non-winch plates, parking sensors, fogs, spots etc would not need to worry about changing them, although a non-winch a-bar is still going to be an issue and I'm not sure there is any neat and tidy way to "convert" one.

What do you guys think?

Hi
Why I will prefer a hidden winch then an external?
- It will be for occasional use
- The normal optic of my D3 will not be defaced
- In Luxembourg you always have to pass a special technical check in our car control centre when you make changes at your car (A bar, not original alloys, ...)
- No changes needed on the sump plate and parking sensors

RPG, your above post will resolve my doubt’s between the hidden an external winch :thumbright: because the most of the advantages of the external winch can be eliminated.

You've certainly done some research on this Roger - I'm well impressed. Looks as if I'll need to exchange my non winch A Bar then!
