It's what I said as well. I get the D3 thing - I'm the same. I'd say get an engine where you either know the history or from someone you trust. Then you'll have faith in it but won't be reliant on it for thousands and thousands of miles. Maybe one from a S type jag? At least you'll know the mileage. Lease a van for work.

No, I'm not going for recon or s-type replacement. I could, but I'm not going to.

What's wrong with a recon? I get not wanting a used engine but a recon is as good as new, often better since the reconditioners work to factory tolerances or better and every one is checked.

Define recon. Recon to me is take an old failed engine and make it work. A reman engine on the other hand is to take that same failed engine and rebuild it, remachining the block, heads etc back to factory tolerances, so is as good as new - and as Dom says probably better as it will also have any mechanical upgrades.

I'd go for a Reman if I could yes, but alas not available :-( but not a recon.

Is it worth talking to Land Rover for any bench units?
Not sure they would consider passing them in due to confidence and liability etc, but it's worth a chat I'm sure.

Daft question but how long and how many miles did this engine last? You pulled a rabbit out of the hat getting it, any chance of doing the same?

If only I could think of something useful to type here!! :(

It's 5 years and 131,000 miles. I don't think I'd be so lucky this time as there's no service history at all and it's not a clear specific failure part.
I didn't contribute anything towards the engine costs, so it would be residual warranty from original purchase in 2007.... not that it was in warranty.

LR won't have bench units and if they did, there's no way they'd let them out.
