Guess there is always a chance the battery could be a dud.

Beyond that, I guess the alternator could be faulty. Mine went some time ago, but my friend commented on a slight flickering of the internal lights half a year before it shorted out. Would be interesting to run a scope over the battery poles to see if there is indication of failure of a single diode. There are a lot of diodes (more than I have seen on other alternators), and I guess a single failed diode would not necessarily be noticable... Does the vehicle report voltages upwards of 15v a minute after starting - it should.

I would propose that a failed diode in the alternator could be the reason for the belief by some that the D3 is particularly sensitive to the batteries, which to me sounds very strange...
