To AGM or not to AGM? That is the question

Post by XDAndy » Mon Dec 17, 2018 12:13 am

Lots of posts, lots of points of view, lots of arguments, but none the wiser.

My 2005 D3 2.7 TDV HSE seems to have killed a Hankook 100Ah (850CCA) 'wet' battery in a little over 2 years.

So.

1: AGM or 'wet'; my drive style is lots of short journeys with two 50 mile round trips a week. Reading would suggest AGM.
2: D3's kill AGM's, or at least the alternator does long term, due to over voltage charging??? Don't think the D3 CCF file can be adjusted to suit AGM, can it?
3: If 'wet', is the recommended Exide (100Ah, 900CCA) really any better than my Hankook?
4: if 'yes' to #3, then would a Bosch S5013 (100Ah, 830CCA) be better than an Exide? As in quality of battery rather than number specs; its pitched at the premium car market;; that or the equiv Varta, as they seemed to be made in the same factory ...

Basically, my current battery sits at 11.5v and everything shuts down on starting the car up. Reconditioning via my ctek has done bugger all, so looking to replace with something.

Ultimately I want to put an aux circuit and battery in here.

kind regards

Andy

Interestingly, asked my local LR dealer and it seems that the LR recommended part is now an AGM battery. Can that be right?

Not sure on the AGM question but a little over 18 months ago I put one of these in my MY05 SE -

It comes with a 5 year warranty and, to date, I've had no problems firing up. I had an Exide previously and it gave up the ghost a month out of warranty and was struggling even before that - so not impressed.

With regards an ancillary battery I had an Optima Yellow Top originally when I first set things up (about 2008 I think...) but it began to struggle after a few years before eventually dying. The cost of a new one was painful so I opted for this (IIRC - to wet to go and double check right now) -

This has a 2 year warranty and, again, it's performed without problem.

Mine had an AGM put in October 2012 @ about 118k - I sold it in Feb 2016 and as far as I know it is still the same battery. It was on 234k when I sold it.

The alternator went at 174k not aware of it being replaced before - certainly don't remember it being replaced in my ownership (From about 60k)

Put an Exide AGM in my D4, 24 months and 35k later and it was in a not happy way. I had a second batt connected via a solenoid, always starting with 2 batteries, so never saw the symptoms. Luckily Exide on its own, plus lots of use of battery charger, got the car to where she was sold so did enough. :thumbright:

Did you have an AGM 2nd battery Del? If not the internal resistances are different and the two batteries will not charge the same - I changed my aux battery for an AGM so they were matched - though mine had (has) a T-Mac controller so didn't start on the two batteries.

No idea, it was whatever I replaced my Yellow Top with, however I doubt it. The aux battery was only in for a few months though, and the combo worked until the end. All worked out in the end. Though SWMBO’s Jazz needs a new battery but that can wait til we’re back in the summer. :thumbright:

Thanks guys!

In my desperation, posted on ‘the other forum’ as well, so thanks DSL for responding to both :)

Whatever battery you decide to go with I’ve always found www.tayna.co.uk difficult to beat for price, knowledge and service
