Bodsy's Brake Bible

Post by Bodsy » Tue Apr 13, 2010 4:38 pm

Hi All,

I have got a fair way through my Brake Bible, a guide for the unitiated to change brake pads, disks, EPB shoe's and adjustment and eanything else brake related.

I'd really appreciate your feedback and if you can check (those of you that have done it) if I have missed anything out or got the instructions wrong.
There are also some gaps in the instructions but I wanted to put the markers in for when I do them.

All feedback good and bad is welcomed to try to get this up as the definitive!

Please feel free to sign up & I'll let you know as and when it's updated.

Cheers

Ian

French Version of the brake Bible is now available. With a great many many thanks to Gecko for his hard work in Translating it.

Clarified EPB shoe instructions & corrected references to other sections. Added paypal donations information (requested by users of the guide.) Internationalised wheel location references by removing UK based reference to OS/NS, replaced with physical Front Left or Front Right descriptions.

Here's some common questions, I'll update this post as and when they are asked and I remember...
Q. My pads have worn quite quickly, what is the normal life for Brake pads?

A. Pads can wear anywhere from 10k to 40k depending on your driving style and if you get any stones/sand or off-road debris in-between the disk and the Pads.
About 20k (+-5k) is not unusual

Personally, my first pad change was at 25k (all round, low pads and warning light came on) my second pad change was at 43k (front only, during service, no warning light) and my recent pad change was at 53k (all round and Disks, no warning light) but there was still some meat on the pads (esp the fronts) but I changed them anyway as I was changing disks.
Q. I thought the rear Caliper carrier had a higher Torque of 175Nm?
A. This used to be the case, but current LR GTR figures show 115Nm for both the D3 and D4. Front Caliper carrier torque remains at 275Nm

Video Version in development
It may end up being a bit simple for some people, but once I've done all the chapters, I'll no doubt end up doing a much much shorter version that just includes the key operational aspects for those that are a bit more au fait with brakes etc.

Anyway, the first video that shows the unboxing of all the parts I'm planning on changing is here:

The second Video has just gone up. This episode explains about safely jacking up of the Disco (same for RRS) a couple of ways and the use and position of Axle stands.
Here:-

I'll update this thread with the relevant links to the other videos as I finish editing them (it honestly takes forever...) but if you want to subscribe on YouTube, that should also alert you to new videos as the come along.

Excellent guide so far :thumbright:
Should it be marked as copyrighted? My FBH guide wasn't, and apparently ended up almost verbatim in an independent companies FBH timer install kit...

Ian - a couple of (minor) suggestions:

1) In the "Tools Required" section add the range of settings the torque wrench needs (especially as the brakes need a very high setting)

2) Also add km/h in the "Bedding In" section

Just my thoughts :thumbright:

re Copyrighting, I'm not sure if it would technically be copyrightable material :?: I guess the photo's are copyright mine, but the instructions are a re-word of a mix of my experience and LR's instructions essentially.

Will mark it copyright anyway just for the hell of it :thumbright: :thumbright:

Worth noting it as copywrite, however, would you really sue someone if they used it / copied it without consent?

John,

Can you put your D3 into Bedding in mode & see how fast you have to drive til it bings and tells you you're no longer in bedding in mode.
Just checking to see if the number stays the same (i.e. 19 and 29MPH = 19 and 29KPH as far as the procedure is concerned), or if it is adjusted elsewhere for metric speed (i.e. 30KPH and 46KPH).

Cheers

Ian
