Yes, it's 'cos it's colder out at one end of the country than the other, and they don't want to have to put another whippet on the fire.

Put some winters on Jane's Jazz yesterday - couldn't get Contis for a month, so went with Bridgestones - and have to say, just driving off from the garage (It was wet and about 4-5'C) they felt so much better on the road.
No idea how they compare with the others - and having never driven on winters before, I have no point of reference. Just got to see how Jane feels when she drives it now......

I generally find it difficult to tell the difference in tyres as I tend to think that unless you're nearing the limits of traction then there is no real difference and that I'd have to drive the same stretch of road back to back with different tyres on and pushing the limits to notice the difference.
Having said all of that it was -1 the other morning and the road outside was frosty and I did sense (I won't say feel as I couldn't swear to it) that the car felt more sure footed than it would have done on my BFG's.
I like knowing that I've got winter tyres on, but I can't really say I can notice a difference between them and normal road tyres.

Is that with the D3 Stu?
I have to admit, it might have been due to the fronts being pretty worn out - so anything would have felt better - but I don't think so.
But they did feel better - hard to explain, but compared to the D3, there is a lot more feel through the seat of your pants. And no, I wasn't pushing them at all - Jane was in the car after all - just driving normally.

When we swap to winters (or back) on the Jazzez we don't notice any difference in normal road conditions, even if bit cold. The only difference is there is a bit more road noise on the winter from normal tyres.
However on ice and snow the difference is massive, you can't drive on compacted snow like it's Tarmac but it's a world away from how the normal tyres would be. I did a run down from Grantoon to Perth last March, on prob couple of inches of snow that the plough left, mostly sat behind a van doing 55 - 60mph. He chickened out when it got a bit deeper and slowed down to ~40mph, just nipped round him and continued at 60mph til hit clear roads around Perth then up to proper Mway speed. OK I had to be careful and pay attention but had no problem maintaining a speed that would have been crazy with normal tyres. For the avoidance of doubt, Jazz (newer one) on Conti T810 winters.
