I struck lucky with the chassis wiring, but you can easily separate the necessary bit from the rest of the loom on a car in a breaker's yard (blue plug = active diff wiring) ...

Spooky, thanks for the info. I hope you don't mind if I upload your "bible" to my box.net account and link to it on http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.ph ... ost2179968, giving you full credit?
Re: How to, Retro Fit an Active Rear Diff
Hi all
Looking at doing this to my newly acquired D3 as well. Great write up, but tackling the electrical is daunting!
The mechanics will be easy enough though.
A question though, whilst trying to source all the items, (I live in Australia) will it cause issues to the ediff if it's driven around without being connected to the system? I know it won't work as an Ediff, but I don't want to cause damage either.
Admin, please let me know if this post is in the wrong place.
Cheers all
Kev

The diff will be fine, acting normal but no locking function of course until wired up.

Re: How to, Retro Fit an Active Rear Diff
Just have to ask; if it's not connected, surely the diff will arrive with the amount of pre-load it had set when it was last connected to the donor? I'd imagine chances are it's completely unlocked, but if it's salvage from a roll-over or something it could come pre-set at 95% locked when the donor vehicle died right?
Is there a way of manually releasing the load on the limited slip clutches before fitting?

Re: How to, Retro Fit an Active Rear Diff
Istr that they're positively engaged, so removing the power removes the engagement.
Would be easy enough to tell before putting on the car just by turning the propshaft end. If the outputs turn in different directions then it's not locked up.

Re: How to, Retro Fit an Active Rear Diff
Having done at least 15,000 miles with my lockign rear diff either disconnected from the ECU or turned off in the CCF, and now with it all working fine, I can confirm that no harm will be done Kev
Imagine a world with no hypothetical situations..........
