How to: DIY auto-box mega-flush

Post by Kingmav66 » Sat Mar 15, 2014 11:02 pm

A brief outline of how I carried this out.
This what I used, 'supply' barrel, 'waste' barrel, 2 hoses and a compressor.
Image

The supply barrel had a shraeder valve in the cap.
Image

Identify the top hose to the ATF cooler.
Image

The direction of the oil flow is from the hose in to the cooler. So I connected my ATF supply up to the cooler, and my waste hose to the pipe.
Image

Fill the supply barrel with min 10litres of ATF (inc Dr.Tranny)
Image

Pressurise the supply barrel.
Start the engine, this wil start pumping out old ATF.
Monitor the rate of the waste, and keep supplying at the same rate.
Stop when the waste ATF has changed colour to new ATF.
Reconnect pipe.
As I said, this is brief. Any questions fire away.
Also, can someone archive these photos somehow, just incase I erase them by mistake. :thumbright:

You should hire your kit out, save everyone else from making the same thing.

I'm sure when Gordon did mine the pressure was pretty low - basically the gearbox pump does most of the work, with just a little extra to get over the additional resistance of the kit. The 4Bar you saw is probably the total of the gearbox and the unit pump.

Looks a nice job, was there a noticeable difference before and after on ATF colour and the driving performance ? :thumbright:

Clem, if you leave the gearbox oil too long before changing it, then I would expect you to notice a difference, but if you do it on a regular basis - say every 60-80K miles then you shouldn't feel any difference.

Dr Tranny allegedly is a mixture of the same stuff that is in the normal oil, so is useful in old oil, but not necessarily doing anything in new oil. The only question is whether it has anything in it that does something to the friction plates. I.E. deglazes them.

Nice one Gary :thumbright:

Colour of fluid will depend on the state of your box, had mine flushed by Gordon at Four Tech and despite 40mph vibration the old fluid wasn't much darker than the new. If it's much darker or black then the fluid has been toasted.

The 'Mega-flush' units I've seen are purely mechanical, ie the waste oil being pumped by the gearbox, drives a turbine which drives the pump for the new oil at a 1:1 ratio.
I pressurised the barrel to around 2 bar, this delivered at approx the same rate as the waste discharged. Although the new oil can be fed in by gravity, it's just not at the same rate as it's discharged.
The old oil was a burnt brown colour, new ATF was like cherryade.
I had very bad 'shudders' before, and none afterwards. I'm guessing my torque converter will need changing in the long run. But at the cost of just the oil, I'll keep changing that for now :thumbright:
