G4 Expedition Drawer Build

Post by CDS » Sun Jul 30, 2017 2:54 pm

So, I thought it was about time I posted up a few pics of my drawer system in the G4 that I built back in April & May before I wen to the Pyrenees with Bodsy & Amondeggs and co.

It kind of came about by accident when it dawned on me that the water tank I'd bought ages ago for the Sankey trailer might fit under the commercial floor in the G4....

I decided that over kill was the way to go....so in a 3 drawer modular type way it now houses:

Hot & cold running water (the tap runs into the sink when the sink is pulled out or will run out over the lower tailgate if the sink pullout is closed)
Rear wheel carrier hand soap dispenser
Kitchen Sink
2 burner gas hob
2 Fridge Slides
2 slide out chopping boards/ work surfaces
3 Drawers
Nespresso Machine
Mains Hook-up (to run the fridges overnight & Nespresso machine & 240v Kettle)
Wine Rack
Gin Dispensary (still a work in progress)

The length of the drawers was decided by the fit of the sink and the hob, so it doesn't fit with the middle row seats in up, but that wasn't important to me as when ever I go to the Pyrenees etc I always take out the 5 rear seats and fit the commercial floor anyway. It turned out that while the tank I had fitted under commercial floor frame ' on the bench' it didn't fit when in the car, this was caused by the undulations in the floor pan of the D3 meaning that the tank was 20mm too tall....I used a 25 litre jerry can type water carrier behind the drivers seat as a temporary workaround, and the search is on to find a tank that fits. I've found a couple of options I just need to make the final choice and get it actually bought, delivered and fitted under the floor.

It's basically 15mm waterproof ply with some heavy duty 1.1m full extension slides to make the long drawers, with external surfaces covered with carpet to trim and internal surfaces sprayed with black Plastikote along with various other slides to make all the other bits work.

Clive - What's the source of the slides ? Whenever I take a look they seem to be about 220 a set which is heading close to an actual manufacturer fridge slide.

Keep thinking about a draw system in the boot but 1) Jamie needs the space for his bikes etc and 2) prefer a bit of flexibility with packing and 3) would hate to be cooking that close to an open boot and having the vehicle smelling of stale, cooked food...

But the fridge slide is needed...

I know John, but a bit of cooking smell is far more desirable than the smell of stale gin
