Overcharging??

Post by hangman3 » Mon Mar 12, 2018 7:53 pm

Got a few electrical issues on the D3 & while checking the other day I found that Its getting 16.5 - .7v when charging. Any ideas why this might be & how to sort it?

That’s definitely too high!

Couple of reasons for that.

Alternator broken
Battery broken
Earthing points loose somewhere.

Or wrong alternator fitted - some "cheap" ones I seem to remember didn't regulate correctly and overcharged. Causes all sorts of issues.

Isn't the aircon module also involved in charging voltage (allowing the outside temperature to increase voltage to aid low temp charging)?
With that in mind, a good earth to those radio/aircon modules is also going to be important, and I think those are the ones down at the bottom of the driver and passenger footwells, for instance behind the side panel under the bonnet release.

Having said that, every time my charge voltage has gone wrong, it has for me always been the alternator itself.
